IHS Class Of 1961 Adventures
Four members of the Ithaca High School Choir which had travelled to Washington for the National Music Educator's Conference to sing the Cherubini Mass in January 1961, participated in a television panel show, "Youth Wants to Know," filmed on January 12, 1961, consisting of an interview of Sen. Wayne Morse of Oregon. Shown here are (from left) pupils Mary Lou Hoffman, Susan Blair, Senator Morse, Peter Storandt, and Thomas Rawski. The TV show was apparently not broadcast in Ithaca (although the Ithaca Journal indicated WICB-TV was going to try to get a copy to show); it appeared nationally on January 15.
Half-Moons or Black and White Cookies
This recipe is from our "Home Dairy" in Ithaca where after school us girls/boys would stop and purchase them on the way home.
Ingredients: 2 cups Brown Sugar, 1 c. Margarine, 3 c. Flour, 4 oz. Baking Chocolate, 2 Eggs, 1 tsp. Vanilla, 1 tsp. Baking Soda, 1 c. Milk
Directions: Cream Sugar and Margarine. Beat in Eggs and Chocolate (which has been melted). Add Milk alternating with Flour & Baking Soda. Add Vanilla. Drop mixture by heaping tbsp. on to greased cookie sheet. Spread batter lightly. 350 degrees- for 10 minutes. Cool and frost flat side of cookies.
For the Frosting: you can buy a can of Betty Crocker Milk Chocolate Frosting and a can of White Frosting or the following:
Directions: Combine 4 c. Confectionery Sugar, 1/2 c. Margarine. Add 1 tsp. Vanilla and enough Milk to make spreading consistency. Frost 1/2 of cookies with white. Add 2 squares of melted Chocolate to remaining frosting and frost other half of cookies with the chocolate frosting.
